> Our first weekly look back: the AI company behind Claude filed to sell shares, the smartest AI changed hands twice, the next Moon rocket stood up, new cancer drugs gave patients months and years, and air taxis and drones moved closer to everyday life.

Welcome to The Week, our Sunday newsletter that gathers the biggest advances of the past seven days in one place, Saturday's news included. From here on it arrives every Sunday at 9:00 AM ET. Every story links to the evening edition where we covered it, with all the sources.

## In 60 Seconds

- AI had a huge week: Anthropic, the maker of Claude, filed to sell shares to the public, Google said its new Gemini 4 Carbon is now the top scoring AI, and France's Mistral gave away one of the biggest AI models ever made for anyone to download.
- NASA stood up the giant core of the rocket for the next crewed Moon mission, asked companies how to keep the Hubble telescope flying, and astronauts unrolled a new solar wing on the space station.
- Medicine kept delivering: an FDA approval for advanced prostate cancer, a head and neck cancer drug that cut the risk of death in half in a big trial, and a faster proposed path for gene-editing cures made for one patient.
- The future of getting around came closer: an electric air taxi flew the route of the world's first airline, and drones won the right to use cellphone airwaves.

## Lead Signal

**AI's big week: one maker goes public, the top score changes hands, and a giant model goes free**

![A scene from a world generated by Google DeepMind's Genie 4](https://singularitynightly.com/img/editions/genie-4-1200.jpg)

On Monday, Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI, made public its [filing to sell shares](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/2130357/000162828026067168/anthropicpbc-sx1.htm) on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT. It showed $16.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2026, up from $1.16 billion a year earlier ([our Monday edition](/editions/2026-10-26-evening-1/)). On Tuesday, OpenAI and Anthropic each said their AI found a disproof of a famous 1999 assumption in computer science; experts are still checking the work ([Tuesday](/editions/2026-10-27-evening-2/)). On Wednesday, Google [released Gemini 4 Carbon](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/gemini-models/introducing-gemini-4-carbon/), which independent tester Artificial Analysis then confirmed as the top scoring AI at 59, one point above Claude Opus 5.5; Google gave it first to cyber defenders ([Wednesday](/editions/2026-10-28-evening-3/)). On Thursday, Mistral [released Mistral Large 4](https://mistral.ai/news/mistral-large-4-oss/), about 1 trillion parameters, as open weights anyone can download ([Thursday](/editions/2026-10-29-evening-4/)).

> **Why it matters:** in one week, ordinary people got three new doors into AI. You may soon be able to own shares in a company that builds it, the very best models keep getting better, and a near-top model is now free for any school, hospital or small business to run on its own computers. Competition like this is what makes AI cheaper and more useful for everyone. Not investment advice.

## The Desks

### AI Models

**Two AI labs say they knocked down a famous rule of computing**

![Illustration: a glowing green grid of on and off switches with one bright path cutting through it](https://singularitynightly.com/img/editions/eth-switch-maze-1376.jpg)
*A giant puzzle of on and off switches, and a shortcut through it. Credit: Illustration: Singularity Nightly (AI-generated)*

OpenAI and Anthropic each said their AI found a method that disproves the Exponential Time Hypothesis, a 1999 assumption about how hard certain logic puzzles are, [TechCrunch reports](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/27/frontier-ai-labs-say-their-models-refuted-the-exponential-time-hypothesis-what-does-that-mean/). The hypothesis's own authors and MIT's Ryan Williams are leading an open review, and neither result is confirmed yet. More in [Tuesday's edition](/editions/2026-10-27-evening-2/).

> **Why it matters:** if it holds up, it would be one of the first times an AI changed what mathematicians believe, not just repeated it. That is a glimpse of AI as a partner in discovery. It is a claim under review, not a settled fact.

### [LAUNCH] Launch and Orbit

**NASA stands up the rocket for the next crewed Moon mission**

![The Artemis III SLS core stage being joined to its solid rocket boosters inside NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building](https://singularitynightly.com/img/editions/artemis-iii-sls-stacking-1920.jpg)

Inside the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center, teams [placed the 212-foot core stage](https://www.nasa.gov/image-article/artemis-iii-sls-core-stage-joins-boosters-at-kennedy/) of the Artemis III rocket between its twin boosters. The same week, ULA [set Nov. 13](https://spaceflightnow.com/2026/10/28/untied-launch-alliance-announces-mid-november-return-to-flight-for-vulcan-rocket/) for its Vulcan rocket's return to flight, SpaceX test-fired all 33 engines of its Starship booster, and India launched NVS-03 for its own GPS-style navigation system. See [Wednesday](/editions/2026-10-28-evening-3/) and [Friday](/editions/2026-10-30-evening-5/).

> **Why it matters:** the rocket that will carry astronauts back toward the Moon is taking shape, piece by piece. More rockets and more launch companies mean cheaper trips to space, which is how satellite internet, weather forecasts and GPS keep getting better on the ground.

### Satellites and Orbit

**NASA asks companies how to keep Hubble flying**

![The Hubble Space Telescope floating above Earth after astronauts released it from the space shuttle Atlantis in May 2009](https://singularitynightly.com/img/editions/hubble-over-earth-1920.jpg)
*Hubble above Earth in May 2009, just after the fifth and last shuttle servicing mission. Credit: NASA*

NASA [asked industry for ideas](https://science.nasa.gov/missions/hubble/nasa-explores-potential-commercial-servicing-for-hubble-telescope/) to boost the 36 year old Hubble Space Telescope higher, service it, or bring it down safely. It is slowly sinking and could fall back around 2033 to 2034, so a rescue would need to fly by about 2032; answers are due Nov. 30. On Thursday, two astronauts also unrolled a new solar wing on the space station on a 7 hour spacewalk. See [Thursday](/editions/2026-10-29-evening-4/) and [Friday](/editions/2026-10-30-evening-5/).

> **Why it matters:** Hubble has shown us galaxies billions of light years away and is still working. A private rescue mission would be a first, and a sign that fixing and upgrading things in space is becoming normal.

### Air Mobility

**An air taxi flies the route of the world's first airline, 112 years later**

![Joby's electric air taxi flying over Tampa](https://singularitynightly.com/img/editions/joby-tampa-1600.jpg)
*Joby's electric air taxi flying over Tampa on Oct. 29. Credit: Joby Aviation*

Joby Aviation [flew its electric air taxi](https://www.jobyaviation.com/news/joby-brings-its-vertical-takeoff-and-landing-air-taxi-to-florida) from St. Petersburg to Tampa International Airport in about 10 minutes, the route of the first scheduled airline flight in 1914. Earlier in the week the FCC [voted to let drones use cellphone airwaves](https://www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-opens-more-cellular-spectrum-drones), and a small Electra airplane landed on a Manhattan helipad. See [Thursday](/editions/2026-10-29-evening-4/) and [Friday](/editions/2026-10-30-evening-5/).

> **Why it matters:** a 10 minute hop instead of an hour in traffic is the promise of air taxis. These are still test flights, not paid rides, but every one moves that day closer. Drones on cell networks are a step toward deliveries and inspections done by air.

### Medicine

**Cancer drugs that buy real time**

![Illustration: a Y-shaped antibody grips two points on a glowing cell](https://singularitynightly.com/img/editions/antibody-tumor-1376.jpg)
*An antibody built to grab two targets on a cancer cell at once. Credit: Illustration: Singularity Nightly (AI-generated)*

Genmab said its drug petosemtamab, given with Keytruda, [cut the risk of death by 50%](https://ir.genmab.com/news-releases/news-release-details/genmab-announces-statistically-significant-clinically-meaningful) for people with advanced head and neck cancer in a large trial. The FDA [approved talazoparib with enzalutamide](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/resources-information-approved-drugs/fda-approves-talazoparib-enzalutamide-metastatic-androgen-pathway-modulation-naive-or-sensitive) for a gene-matched form of advanced prostate cancer, and proposed a faster path for gene-editing treatments built for one patient. See [Monday](/editions/2026-10-26-evening-1/), [Tuesday](/editions/2026-10-27-evening-2/) and [Wednesday](/editions/2026-10-28-evening-3/).

> **Why it matters:** for families facing cancer, these are not just numbers; they are birthdays and holidays together. Matching drugs to a person's own tumor, and fixing one person's own DNA typo, is medicine becoming personal.

### Defense

**A hypersonic missile goes into production, and the Navy orders a new landing ship**

![An artist's rendering of the Navy's Landing Ship Medium](https://singularitynightly.com/img/editions/landing-ship-medium-400.jpg)
*An artist's view of the Landing Ship Medium, from TOTE Services and Hanwha Defense USA. Credit: TOTE Services / Hanwha Defense USA*

The Air Force gave Lockheed Martin a [$694 million production contract](https://defensescoop.com/2026/10/27/air-force-hypersonic-missile-production-contract-lockheed-martin/) for its ARRW hypersonic missile, and the Navy's builder picked Hanwha Philly Shipyard for the [first Landing Ship Medium](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/tote-services-identifies-hanwha-defense-usa-for-medium-landing-ship-construction-additional-shipyard-selections-planned-302924909.html) at $269 million. See [Tuesday](/editions/2026-10-27-evening-2/) and [Friday](/editions/2026-10-30-evening-5/).

> **Why it matters:** this is where tax dollars go in defense technology. The landing ship also means shipbuilding work in Philadelphia.

### Law and Policy

**New York sets rules for AI chatbots that talk with kids**

![Illustration: a glowing shield stands between a green chat bubble and a tablet on a child's desk](https://singularitynightly.com/img/editions/chatbot-kid-shield-1376.jpg)
*New rules for AI chatbots that talk with children. Credit: Illustration: Singularity Nightly (AI-generated)*

New York [signed a law](https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-signs-nation-leading-legislation-protect-kids-ai-chatbots-and-ensure-baby) that stops AI chatbots from pretending to be a person or claiming a romantic relationship with users under 18, with fines up to $25,000 for each violation. Thursday, the FCC also voted to stop labs in China from testing electronics sold in the U.S. See [Wednesday](/editions/2026-10-28-evening-3/) and [Thursday](/editions/2026-10-29-evening-4/).

> **Why it matters:** if you have kids or grandkids who talk to AI apps, these are the first state rules written for exactly that. Other states often copy New York.

### Tokenized Assets

**The company behind nearly every U.S. trade turns stocks and bonds into tokens**

![Illustration: a stone vault door dissolves into streams of glowing green cubes](https://singularitynightly.com/img/editions/vault-to-tokens-1376.jpg)
*Traditional securities stepping onto a blockchain. Credit: Illustration: Singularity Nightly (AI-generated)*

DTCC, which holds more than $114 trillion in securities for the U.S. market, [launched its Tokenization Service](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20261027462327/en/DTCC-Tokenization-Service-Goes-Live-Marking-Major-Milestone-in-the-Adoption-of-Digital-Assets) with 20 big firms signed on, including Bank of America, JPMorgan and Fidelity. Tokenized real-world assets reached [$39.56 billion](https://app.rwa.xyz/) by Friday, per RWA.xyz. See [Wednesday](/editions/2026-10-28-evening-3/). Not investment advice.

> **Why it matters:** when the plumbing of Wall Street itself starts using tokens, trades could one day settle in minutes instead of days, any hour of any day. Not investment advice.

### Wildcard

**Robots head for jobs and for the stock market**

![Agility Robotics' Digit humanoid robot holding a grey crate](https://singularitynightly.com/img/editions/agility-digit-2000.jpg)
*Agility Robotics' Digit humanoid robot, from the company's press materials. Credit: Agility Robotics*

Agility Robotics, maker of the Digit warehouse robot, [expects to raise about $465 million](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/10/30/3392148/0/en/agility-robotics-and-churchill-capital-corp-xi-announce-expected-gross-capital-raise-of-approximately-465-million-and-anticipated-closing-of-business-combination.html) and start trading on Nasdaq as AGLT on Nov. 5. Bedrock Robotics raised [$600 million](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/10/26/3388197/0/en/bedrock-robotics-raises-600-million-series-c-to-scale-autonomous-construction-equipment-across-u-s-sites.html) for self-driving excavators. See [Monday](/editions/2026-10-26-evening-1/) and [Friday](/editions/2026-10-30-evening-5/). Not investment advice.

> **Why it matters:** robots that carry boxes and dig trenches are leaving the lab and getting paid work. That could ease worker shortages and make building and shipping cheaper.
